Prince George Barracuda Swim Club

Swimming is a way of life that helps young people become physically fit and mentally alert. It teaches club members to help each other improve as swimmers and competitors. It encourages young people to take pride in their performance and responsibility for their development.

A little bit of history

Our club was founded in 1965, with its first competitive season beginning in 1966 under the leadership of Dick Zarek. Originally established as a summer program, the club evolved into a year-round organization in 1970 with the construction of the Four-Seasons Swimming Pool, marking its transition into a winter club.

Prince George Sports Hall of Fame

Several Barracudas alumni and contributors have been inducted into the Prince George Sports Hall of Fame, recognizing their significant achievements:

  • Dick Zarek – Coach and club builder whose early leadership saw the club grow and succeed at provincial levels.

  • Jim Fowlie Jr. – Former Barracuda standout who went on to international success as an athlete and coach.

  • Greg Blackburn – A top Barracuda swimmer in the late 1980s and early 1990s, who represented Canada at the World Games for the Deaf and set world records.

  • Chris Bowie – Canadian record holder, Commonwealth Games medallist, and national champion, who swam with the Barracudas early in his career before achieving wider acclaim.
